Another territory of gaps
28th edition of the Rencontres Internationales Traverse, 12 to 16 March 2025
One afternoon, two screening sessions interspersed with a performance in which roses are embroidered.
Incongruously, chairs fall over to form the ‘A’ of the session, before the catalysis-text of the Rencontres leads us along mountain paths, the wind carries birds and various people act as if under its force, images move to the beat of electro-acoustic songs and water varies in strength and density: In a strange device in the forest, it follows the water level in the river, saying Heraclitus: ‘Everything flows, nothing is immutable’; with the muddy Saint-Laurent, it calls for an ecological awakening; in mauve and orange, it transforms our relationship with the ocean which, tumultuous, embarks towards Antarctica.
The second crossing chooses its strangeness in an animation where even a naïve virgin statue moves; by multiplying a naked male body in the forest, by doubling another male body with the personal story of a woman responding to her own anxieties... another slips male desire into a visual poem before the quest among the tall trees glimpsed in misty places, of a young man in search of encounters, misguided by the GPS of a most contemporary application while texts from the twelfth century by Chrétien de Troyes or anonymous are enunciated.
And the journey leads to another change of scenery, from the topical images of the Far West, from bison to saloons and their regulars, men and women, to the constant metamorphosis under AI. The origins are as diverse as Toulouse, Angoulême and Douarnenez and Paris to Quebec, Montreal to Toronto, Belgium to Korea, Poland and South America.

The Traverse Vidéo association has been promoting experimental art since 1997, first in Toulouse, then in France and abroad. It has established itself as a pioneer in the programming not only of experimental cinema but also of performance and installation art, forms linked to this cinema. Its programming ranges from film to video art, having given early recognition to digital art, and now including creation with the help of AI. More than 4,000 artists and works have been programmed for the Rencontres Internationales, from film in various formats (Super8, 16mm, etc.) to magnetic signals, digital writing and various animation techniques. The events feature installation artists, performers and photographers, and are open to other media depending on the occasion.
