Alice Comedies - Vol. 2
Program of four short films by Walt Disney.
1924-1927. USA. 36 min. Silent.
Alice in cartoon land! Before Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney made a name for himself with a series of highly creative short films. The Alice Comedies series is a perfect example of this, with its unique technique that transports our Alice, played by a young actress in the flesh, into a cartoon world. Join us on the ice floes, in the American West, or in a circus of acrobatic animals for four trips to Wonderland.
Accompanied by
L’Orchestre de Chambre d’Hôte
Isabelle Bagur, flute
Jean-Paul Raffit guitare électrique, effects
Sat. 29 Nov.25 – 8:00 p.m.
L’Auberge rouge
Jean Epstein. 1923. France. 70 min. B&W. Silent. French intertitles.
Production Pathé Consortium Cinéma © Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé.
Jean Epstein, then at the very beginning of his career, adapted Honoré de Balzac's novel. A novel that is as philosophical as it is detective-like, which the filmmaker sticks to closely, skillfully using flashbacks, alternating editing, and superimposition. During a lavish Parisian dinner, one of the guests recounts the adventure that impressed him the most: the crime of the Red Inn...
Accompanied by
Aries Mond, électro
Preceded by the short film Alice Guy tourne un phonocène by Alice Guy to mark the 130th anniversary of Gaumont.

(Neobychainye Priklyucheniya Mistera Vesta v Strane Bolshevikov)
Lev Kuleshov
1924. USSR. 58 min. B&W. Silent. Russian intertitles with French subtitles.
The American in the big Texan hat and the bloodthirsty Bolshevik. Mutual misunderstanding is exploited here in a dark comedy that challenges Uncle Sam on the terrain of burlesque and chase scenes. Physical comedy and mistreated bodies in a film that at times borders on the experimental. Revolutionary burlesque, to be sure.
Accompanied by
Grégory Daltin, accordion
David Haudrechy, saxophone, vocals
Preceded by the short film Questions indiscrètes by Alice Guy to mark the 130th anniversary of Gaumont.
Fri. 5 Dec.25 – 8:00 p.m.
Terre prisonnière
(Zemlya v Plenu)
Fedor Ozep. 1928. USSR. 80 min. B&W. Silent. Russian intertitles with French subtitles.
Terre prisonnière opens with magnificent shots of the sky and wheat fields of Ukraine, then transports us to the urban milieu of Tsarist Russia. This journey corresponds to the descent into slavery of a young peasant woman, forced to leave her husband and children to serve as a nanny; exploited, abused, and then cast out by her masters, she ends up prostituting herself. The camera pays tribute to Anna Sten's hypnotic eyes, where innocence, despair, and redemption have the same expressive power as nature.
Accompanied by
Léonard Le Cloarec saxophone, flute
Percy Louis, electric bass
Aidje Tafial, drums, percussion
Preceded by the short film Sur la barricade by Alice Guy to mark the 130th anniversary of Gaumont.
Sat. 6 Dec.25 – 4:00 p.m.
Family screening, suitable for ages 3/4 and up.
Contes et silhouettes
Lotte Reiniger
1954-1956. UK. 43 min. B&W.
A house with gingerbread walls and a marzipan roof, an evil fairy, a much kinder fairy kidnapped by a nasty toad, and a prince charming turned into a bear: four well-known and lesser-known tales by Perrault, Grimm, and Andersen, brought to life by Lotte Reiniger, the queen of silhouette animation, who also gave us the brilliant The Adventures of Prince Ahmed. On the program: Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Rose Red, and the magnificent Thumbelina. A poetry and beauty that inspired Michel Ocelot's shadow theater and Hayao Miyazaki's animated fantasies.
Accompanied by
Laurent Marode, keyboards, composition, orchestration
Isabelle Seleskovitch, adaptation of texts and songs, vocals, narration, and performance
