The building’s history
For the 43rd edition of the European Heritage Days, Les Abattoirs invites you to take a step back in time through guided tours focusing on the building’s history.
On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026, Les Abattoirs invite you to discover and share the history of the building, its transformation into a museum of modern and contemporary art, and life at the abattoirs before they closed.
The Abattoirs’ tour guides will offer a historical and architectural perspective on the site, exploring the interplay between its various functions and the different eras it has spanned. They will be joined by Didier Taillefer, a photographer who took a series of photographs during the slaughterhouses’ final week of operation in 1988. These photographs will subsequently be on display for anyone wishing to view them.
On Saturday 19 September, Les Abattoirs are also organising a second ‘collection of memories’ event with sound artist Marie Cheneval. We invite you today to share your memories so that, together, we can create a living history of the site: life in the neighbourhood, work, daily routines, moments spent within the building’s walls, anecdotes…

From the former municipal abattoirs to today’s museum of modern and contemporary art, come and discover the architecture and share the memories of a landmark in the Saint-Cyprien neighbourhood and the city of Toulouse.
