Les ÉpouxP
Studiolo, the watershed
The studiolo is a tool for exploring thought. Here, it represents the research journey undertaken by the artist duo Les ÉpouxP – Pascale & Damien Peyret – into the strategy devised by Pierre-Paul Riquet to ensure a regular supply of water to the Canal du Midi.
For the town of Sorèze, they have developed a series of works inspired by the canal’s archives. They have created a graphic work based on the diverse depictions of the Montagne Noire found in the collection of old maps. Echoing Dom Robert’s tapestries, they have created a textile installation depicting the network of streams and rivers that feed the canal and the water-divider, the highest point of the canal. An engraving project completes the exhibition with a ‘retable’ made of folded paper. This large artist’s book unfolds on either side of the ‘bief du partage’, illustrating the mechanics of the weirs and locks that connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean.
