Creatures of thread and light

Creatures of Thread and Light
Guest artist Eliott Causse

In this solo exhibition, Kenia Almaraz Murillo invites viewers to immerse themselves in several families of creatures made of thread, knots and light.

The artist imbues each piece of weaving with a distinct character and a unique story. Whether an animal, a landscape or a myth, each entity pays homage to the artist’s own worldview—part Andean, part urban—revealing several interconnected micro-universes, shaped by the floors and architecture of the château’s rooms. Weavings, paintings, immersive and sound installations… Creatures of Thread and Light presents the last 10 years of Kenia’s work, featuring pieces that resonate with the history of this ancient site, imbued with craftsmanship and ancestral knowledge.

For this occasion, Kenia Almaraz Murillo has invited the artist Eliott Causse, with whom she has collaborated regularly since 2016, to create an immersive space within the Château de Taurines.

Biography

Kenia Almaraz Murillo, born in 1994 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, is a Bolivian artist based in Paris. Having graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2020 with the Jury’s Commendation, she develops work at the crossroads of traditional Andean weaving and contemporary technologies. Trained in low-warp weaving by Simone Prouvé, she draws on a family and artisanal heritage which she combines with industrial materials such as mirrors, headlights or neon lights. Her works explore the links between memory, identity and modernity. She has taken part in several exhibitions, notably in Paris and London, establishing a practice centred on textiles, territory and contemporary narratives. In 2024, the Manufacture de Roubaix, a museum of textile memory and creation, hosted her first solo exhibition in France. She won the Emerige CPGA Prize in 2023 and was also a finalist for the Her Art Prize 2026.

Kenia Almaraz Murillo’s work is included in the collections of Les Abattoirs, Musée – Frac Occitanie Toulouse, marking its entry into French public collections in 2023. It can be seen in the exhibition “Assemblages. Taking Care of Things", on display at Les Abattoirs until 27 September 2026.

Gestes – Arts and Craftsmanship in the Occitanie RegionThe programme at Les Abattoirs, ‘Gestes – Arts and Craftsmanship in Occitanie’, explores the work of artist-craftspeople who are reinventing the relationship between making and materials, whilst mapping the region’s craftsmanship. Kenia Almaraz Murillo’s project, Creatures of Thread and Light, is rooted in a region where the textile tradition remains alive: the Aveyron and, more broadly, Occitanie, which boasts a wool industry undergoing a revival. As France’s leading sheep-farming department, the history of the Aveyron is intimately linked to that of wool. Thanks to a strong industrial heritage, many regional businesses are today preserving or reinventing the skills associated with spinning, weaving and fibre processing, through a sustainable and locally-focused approach. It is against this backdrop that the Château de Taurines, in Centrès (Aveyron), is hosting the artist for a unique exhibition.
