Les Abattoirs won the Orange Foundation's “Access to culture with museums” call for projects for a tactile wall featuring five works from the permanent collection: “Voir l'art avec les mains” (“Seeing art with your hands”). This is a two-part project: a program of visits and workshops for visually impaired adults, and the creation of a permanent tactile wall, with tactile transpositions of five representative works from the collection. This project is part of a global initiative by Les Abattoirs to provide access to art for all publics. With this proposal, the Abattoirs are reaching out to a wider audience of the visually impaired, and are developing long-term tools to enable them to visit independently, including the introduction of dedicated monthly tours.
Safran is supporting Les Abattoirs in the realization of a long-standing project of the public services department: the tactile transposition of Pablo Picasso's stage curtain, La Dépouille du Minotaure en costume d'Arlequin, 1936. Thanks to this aid, visually impaired and blind visitors, as well as the general public, will be able to benefit from this device, which includes an audio guide and labels in large print and Braille.
The tactile transposition of Picasso's stage curtain is an educational project that brings together the three axes supported by Safran, which are educational, social and cultural.
This original approach encourages access to culture, learning processes and autonomy for people with disabilities. It also enables an aesthetic appreciation of the work, a lively and enjoyable way of learning and sharing outside a formal context.
This public-interest project is of significant and lasting benefit to all the Abattoirs' audiences, by widening accessibility to this flagship work in the collection.
