Borrow a work of art
Les Abattoirs, Musée - Frac Occitanie Toulouse, houses a rich collection of over 4,700 works and objects, covering a wide variety of modern and contemporary creative fields: paintings, sculptures, installations, drawings, photographs, prints, experimental cinema, videos and documents. These collections are a public good, designed to be shared and travelled. Every year, more than 700 works are loaned to over a hundred venues in the Occitanie region, France and around the world.
Les Abattoirs supports your exhibition projects
Works from the collections are exhibited throughout France and elsewhere, on the initiative of Les Abattoirs, or in response to loan requests from institutions, public bodies, associations, local authorities or schools.
Once these requests have been approved, the projects are supported by the Pôle Collections and Abattoirs teams, who work together to implement the project: technical feasibility study, documentation research, transport of the works and mounting of the exhibition.
Exhibitions and partnerships with local authorities in Occitanie
These specific projects bring together different entities - Abattoirs, local authorities, associations, national education bodies, etc. - and are aimed at all citizens in the same area. Designed in partnership, they enable works from the collections to be exhibited in spaces belonging to the organization concerned. These projects take place in the western departments of Occitanie (Tarn, Aude, Aveyron, Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées, Gers, Tarn et Garonne, Lot), particularly in rural areas.
Requests for loans in the Occitanie region, which may give rise to partnership projects, should be sent to lesabattoirs.en.region@lesabattoirs.org.

How is the loan application examined?
The Pôle Collections et valorisation centralizes all requests and examines loan applications.
The Comité de prêts et dépôts des Abattoirs (Les Abattoirs' loans and deposits committee) meets every month to examine requests on a collegial basis.
It examines the applicant's project, the availability of the works, technical feasibility (state of conservation of the work, deadline for the request, etc.) and the security and conservation guarantees set out in the Facility Report of the borrowing location.
Les Abattoirs may be obliged to refuse a loan request for various reasons:
- the fragility of certain works, which cannot be moved for conservation reasons;
- the availability of works, which may already be committed to another project;
- requests arriving too late: in view of the number of requests, Les Abattoirs can only process loan requests sufficiently in advance to allow proper planning of condition assessments and movements.
In the event of a favorable decision, an official letter of loan approval is sent to the borrower for signature, together with the loan agreement, which sets out the conditions and commitments of each party.
What are the borrower's obligations?
Borrowing a work of art implies a certain number of commitments on the part of the borrower.
It is imperative to respect deadlines, packaging, exhibition, preventive conservation, transport, insurance and return instructions.
These obligations are detailed on the loan sheet.
In general, borrowers are asked to make the following commitments:
- To take charge of transporting and insuring the works on loan;
- To pay exhibition rights to living artists;
- To include the words “Collections les Abattoirs, Musée - Frac Occitanie Toulouse” on the labels and all documents produced for the exhibition (communication tools, mediation, catalog, etc.)
- To forward to Les Abattoirs all documents created for the event (invitation cards, press kit, publications, etc.). )
Should any pre-loan work be required (conservation-restoration, framing, transport, film copying, purchase of supplies, etc.), estimates will be drawn up by the lender and the costs may be charged to the borrower.
It is therefore important to provide a dedicated budget for these operations from the outset.
Making works available and returning them
Works are made available no earlier than 15 working days before the opening of the exhibition. Works are loaned with their mounting and pedestal devices, if any. If the loan requires a specific device, this must be agreed in advance with Les Abattoirs. Works are returned to Les Abattoirs as soon as possible, and no later than three weeks after the exhibition closes.

Borrow an artist's book
In addition to its collections of artworks, Les Abattoirs also holds a significant collection of artists' books, comprising almost 5,000 printed documents, created from the 1960s to the present day. Ranging from historical avant-gardes such as Fluxus, Conceptual Art and Pop art, to the most contemporary creations, this collection also covers a wide selection of photographers' books (or photobooks). Although a work of art in its own right, the artist's book is part of the large family of multiples, and is more a product of publishing than of the art market. A reproducible object, its originality lies not in its uniqueness or form, but in its content. An inexpensive, easily distributed format, it has established itself as a playful, experimental space for exploring new artistic forms.
How do I request the loan of an artist's book?
Part of the Abattoirs' collections, artists' books can also be loaned.
There are two possible scenarios:
A selection of around ten books may be loaned with works from the Abattoirs' collections, as part of a larger exhibition project.
In this case, the request for books must be included in the loan application for the exhibition, following the procedure outlined above.
It is also possible to design an exhibition based solely on the artist's book collection.
In this case, you can contact the person in charge of the artist's book collection, who will help you to refine your selection and identify potential themes.
In both cases, the request will be examined by the Abattoirs Loans and Deposits Committee.
In the event of a favorable decision, an official letter of loan agreement is sent to the borrower for signature, together with the loan sheet, which sets out the conditions and commitment of each party.
What are the terms and conditions for lending an artist's book?
The obligations associated with borrowing an artist's book are the same as for borrowing a work of art, with the exception of the payment of exhibition rights to living artists, from which the loan of artists' books is exempt.
In the interests of conservation and protection, all artists' books must be displayed in showcases.
Les Abattoirs has showcases (200x80 cm) which can be loaned for exhibition projects, provided that the request is made between 3 and 6 months before the start of the project, and subject to availability on the desired dates.
The installation of artists' books in the display cases can be carried out, depending on the case :
by Abattoirs staff (stage managers, project managers or the person in charge of the artist's book collection);
by borrowers, subject to examination of exhibition conditions by the person in charge of the artist's book collection.
