"Je suis né étranger, j’ai vécu étranger et je mourrai plus étranger encore" writes the French-Lebanese author Amin Maalouf (The Journey of Baldassare). These words inspire the title of the program of exhibitions of contemporary art, realized by les Abattoirs, Museum - Frac Occitanie Toulouse in the Occitan Region on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Retirada. The roads of exile are numerous on the cross-border territory of the country Couserans; the internment camp at Vernet, where 40,000 people stayed between 1939 and 1944, marked the history of the territory. Born from the Spanish republican exile, Serge Pey, whose libertarian adolescence was crossed by the antifranquiste struggle, pays homage here to the land of his ancestors in a Pyrenean place marked by cross-border geopolitics, like a return to the sources. This third edition is part of the regional program "Je suis né étranger", as part of the 80th anniversary of La Retirada. The canal and its history inspire exhibitions that evoke the movement linked to exile, the crossing from one bank to another, from one territory to another.
