Théophile Peris

Théophile Peris experiences places through observation and immersion. His encounters with landscapes, people and animals feed his artistic practice and are expressed through sculpture and drawing. The resulting forms are the fruit of a dialogue between the raw materials he gathers on site and the manual skills inspired by the traditional know-how he learns as he works on his projects. Emerging from his sketchbooks and taking shape in materials such as wool, copper, wood and stone, a whole bestiary populated by strange creatures seems to emerge from the depths of the places the artist visits. To this end, he creates his own tools, with a view to autonomy and economy of means, and to, as the Occitan expression goes, trobar lo biais: finding his own means of resolving formal questions.

One technique in particular plays a key role in his work: felting, a non-woven textile technique made from raw wool and practised since ancient times. The artist usually collects the wool from breeders in the area where he works. His mastery of this technique now enables him to create hangings that play with the scale of the spaces he occupies, as will be the case this summer in the exhibition space at Maisons Daura.
