Mélodie Bajo
Mezzanine Sud in Occitanie
Les Abattoirs, Musée - Frac Occitanie Toulouse and Pôle Arts et Cultures / Château de la Falagarié present the exhibition “Je me suis dissoute lorsque j'ai découvert cette fibre animée on s'est évaporé-e-s à l'intérieur” by Mélodie Bajo, as part of the touring Mezzanine Sud prize, supporting the development of the young local art scene.
For her project, "I dissolved when I discovered this animated fiber and we evaporated inside", Mélodie Bajo wishes to express herself through a fictional character. Her double uses letters, words, and develops reflections on knowledge, social roles, equality between peers, and a new language. This character, utopian and not entirely human, tackles a variety of issues, seeking to bring order to our misunderstandings, but failing to do so. Defying established conventions, Mélodie Bajo offers an intriguing exploration of our perceptions and systems of thought.
She uses voice, humor and often reclaimed materials for her creations, exploring themes oriented towards interactionist sociology, gender studies and psychology.
Mélodie Bajo :
Born in Paris in 1995, she lives in Toulouse and works between Montreal and Toulouse. A 2018 graduate of isdaT, her practice oscillates between performance and installation. In 2019-2020, the visual artist will take part in a residency at the Abattoirs library in Toulouse, culminating in an exhibition.
In 2021, she becomes a laureate of the Création en cours residencies, run by Ateliers Médicis, launching an artistic project around transmission that she continues in 2022 during the Transat residencies, also run by Ateliers Médicis. In 2023, following a residency at Pollen, Monflanquin, she presented her first solo exhibition, entitled Chaordre.
The year 2024 marked a significant milestone in her career, notably with the start of her collaboration with sociologist
Lisandre Labreque-Lebeau on transatlantic projects between France and Canada, combining art and sociology. She also presented a solo exhibition at the BBB Centre d'Art in Toulouse, entitled "On sent danser nos troubles dans ces gestes bleus", following a territorial residency in Toulouse's northern districts.
The same year, Mélodie Bajo also took part in the group exhibition Ça improvise du réel, organized to mark the 30th anniversary of
BBB Centre d'Art. She also presented her performance "Je me suis dissoute lorsque j'ai découvert cette fibre animée et on s'est
évaporé-e-s à l'intérieur", at the Fonderie Darling in Montreal.
