4th Rodez Artists' Book Biennial

Art'in folio is a celebration of artists' books, bringing visitors together around a programme of events hosted in various cultural venues in Aveyron, culminating in the presentation of works by some thirty exhibitors from all over France. Les Abattoirs has accepted this new invitation to present a selection of artists' books from its collection.

The collection of artists' books in the Bibliothèque des Abattoirs, Musée - Frac Occitanie Toulouse

Among the 38,0000 works on twentieth- and twenty-first-century art that make up the holdings of the Bibliothèque des Abattoirs, Musée - Frac Occitanie Toulouse, we should mention its essential collection of artists' books, which can be consulted on request. Born with the Musée des Abattoirs in 2000, it wasn't until 2010 that this collection, which now comprises almost 5,000 works, was systematically enriched and enhanced, and now helps to give the library a strong identity.

The generic term ‘artist's book’ in fact conceals a range of different types of work: while the majority of the library's holdings are artist's books, there are also artists' magazines, photobooks, posters, ephemera and vinyl LPs with their sleeves, etc. All of these objects have been designed with an artistic approach in mind, making them (multiple) works in their own right.

The collection offers a historical overview of this new artistic genre. Starting with founding artists such as Edward Ruscha, and including major names in contemporary art such as Christian Boltanski and Sophie Calle, it covers the entire history of the artist's book, from its genesis in the early 1960s to the present day.
