Sandra Lorenzi - Nos cimes en racines

From 15 march to 13 july 2019
les Abattoirs Library

Echoing the exhibition of publications on the Spanish exodus, Sandra Lorenzi (born in 1983, lives and works in Montreuil) occu- pies the spaces of the Abattoirs library and deploys a complex fictional world there, comprising totemic sculptures accompanied by testimonies: À eux, aïeux [To Our Ancestors].

Sandra Lorenzi’s sculptures are full of humanity since they are the bearers of stories strongly related to La Retirada and collected by the artist herself.

Like ex-votos, the volcanic rocks hybri- dised in bronze respond to the drawings produced for the exhibition. The history of the exodus joins the poetics of the sacred, through a story, L’arbre suie [The Soot Tree], in which the artist metaphorically links the uprooting of people to that of trees. Sandra Lorenzi invites us to a wonderful experience of history in motion, combining political, symbolic, and intimate approaches.

In a dialogue with constant rebuttal, she questions our relationship to memory and stories, exile, borders, but also personal and collective mythologies.
